Writing in English, never again.

I am a Farsi speaking author, and I made the wrong decision to write my work of fiction in English. A decision that I now very much regret.

Writing in a language that is not your first language is a completely different game. I thought that was what an editor was for — to help correct the many grammar mistakes I make. Changing commas into full stops, adding definite articles where they are needed and removing the ones that are not, fixing awkward phrasing, cutting out unnecessary padding, and removing sentences that repeat the same meaning.

I thought I had done my part by writing the story, and that an editor would help me polish the language and make it read naturally. But now I find myself stuck, trying to find a publisher who is willing to give me a chance, rather than paying for the services of an editor upfront. And I can't help wondering if I made the wrong decision by writing this book in a language that isn't my first.

Whatever the outcome of this book turn out to be, one thing is clear: this would be the first and the last time I write a book in English.

This is the 16th year that we get together for the Commemoration Day of Ferdowsi. Getting together while we are worried about our loved ones back home may not seem wise at first, but engaging in cultural events can strengthen our resilience and support one another during difficult times. Cultural activities offer emotional relief and stability which strengthen resilience and help communities cope more effectively with worry and stress.

The event is free, but please book in advance to secure your place, as it usually sells out. Visit Friendsofshahnameh.com go to the Events section, select “16th Commemoration Day of Ferdowsi,” and complete your registration. If you do not receive a confirmation email, your booking has not been completed successfully.

After COVID: The Damage We Don’t Measure

I returned to the clinical setting of Pharmacy after several years of pouring all my time and energy into writing—after listening to that inner voice that beckoned and dared me to become a writer. Eventually, I came to understand a hard truth: writing doesn’t pay the bills, at least not yet.

Coming back to work as a pharmacist in the post-corona era was a shock. I couldn’t help but notice how much working conditions had deteriorated. Back then, there was a morning break and an afternoon break, plus a lunch HOUR. All of that had quietly disappeared—much to the delight of business owners. Now I am left with only half an hour of unpaid lunch. After standing all day and working long hours, there are no breaks at all—only an unpaid half-hour!

I was genuinely excited to be back and be involved in providing essential services such as Pharmacy First, blood pressure monitoring, vaccinations and other patient-facing tasks. However, advances in clinical skills did not translate into better pay or better working conditions. Instead, pharmacy had turned into the territory of big multiples, where corporate priorities overshadow everything.

Staffing levels have been cut to the bone while workloads and responsibilities has soared. Even with longer hours, greater responsibility, and rising inflation, I earned less than I had many years earlier. Despite having worked in pharmacy before, I was told I would be paid as a newly qualified pharmacist. Interestingly enough, during my fifteen months of staying with the same multiple, I never received a single pay rise. It seems that once you are labelled “newly qualified,” you are doomed to remain newly qualified forever—at least as far as wages are concerned.

It was only after leaving the company and speaking with other locum pharmacists that I came to realise I should have been paid for my lunch breaks, as I remained signed in as the Responsible Pharmacist throughout. By staying signed in, I continued to accept full professional responsibility. Exploited or what?

Unfortunately, the trend of not paying for half an hour lunch seems to be the accepted trend. My question is: why are responsible organisations, despite knowing this, not challenging or addressing the issue?

As well as the power of corporates, I am now beginning to understand Brexit better too. I discovered one of the reasons why Brexit had to happened. It seems easier to exploit workplace entitlements when dealing with a single country rather than an entire continent—divide and conquer, perhaps?

In summary, we need to acknowledge and address the erosion of labour protections and workers’ rights in the aftermath of COVID.

By the way, do unions still exist in any meaningful way, or whether the COVID era stripped them of their power?

End of Year Letter

Thank you so much for being part of Jar of Words in 2025. Although I ran a few public events, I wasn’t very active on the website this year. Most of my time was spent editing my debut novel, and while I haven’t secured a publishing deal yet, I’m feeling hopeful about getting it fully edited and ready for self-publishing. Watch this space!

Public-facing engagement in 2025:

  • Jar of Words started an important conversation about the reduction of Farsi books in public libraries (for books sake). As a result of our engagement with Manchester library, we got involved in selection of 20 titles from the suggested list of online books. You can read about the outcome of the debate here.

  • In collaboration with Coffee and Books, we also hosted an author event to get to know the work of writers in Greater Manchester who write in Persian.

  • I had the pleasure of performing one of my monologues, The Rules of Invisibility, in collaboration with Sheba Art.

  • Downhill Blues was another one of my monologues that was performed at: Word of Warning: Social Experiment', Contact Theatre.

The Swiss cheese analogy for understanding discrimination and the consequences of moral exclusion.

'Word of Warning: Social Experiment', Contact Theatre on Thursday 17th July. Other artists performed were: Ben Hodge | James Moss | Leah Stone | Rachel Smith  and Xhi Ndubisi.

Thanks to everyone at hÅb for organising ´Social Experiment´. It was a joy to share 'Downhill Blues' monologue with our wonderful audience at Contact Theatre. Thanks to everyone who attended. Thanks also to Atusa, Tamsin, James and Ali for pictures.

Downhill Blues is a monologue that uses the swiss cheese analogy to explore discrimination. ‘Ownership’, ‘labelling’, ‘dehumanisation’, and ‘obedience without critical thinking and maintaining ethical standards’ can lead to moral exclusion. And in turn, it could result in turning a blind eye to genocide.

Downhill Blues

I’m thrilled to announce my next performance: Downhill Blues! This monologue tackles discrimination through the swiss cheese analogy.

Thursday 17th July, I shall be taking part at 'Word of Warning: Social Experiment', Contact Theatre, 6pm-9pm. It is a free event. Other artists performing (as it is now) are: Ben Hodge | James Moss | Leah Stone | Rachel Smith  and Xhi Ndubisi.

I will be sharing 'Downhill Blues' monologue for the first time and would appreciate your feedback.

Hope to see some of you there.

The Power of a Lie

https://issuu.com/cultureword/docs/shots_202/s/11266245 The Power of a Lie By: Shahireh Sharif Amongst the familiar and anonymous faces of work colleagues and acquaintances saying their last goodbyes to my father, he was the only one that I recall. That said, if it weren’t for his tight embrace and the genuine-looking tear in his eye as he offered his condolences, I might not have remembered him three days later when I was waiting for a taxi. He pulled over and offered me a lift. I told him I was going to Baharestan which apparently was on his way. His car, a white Peykan Javanan overtaken by the stench of lingered tobacco, had miniature prayer beads dangling from its rear view mirror. He had a tattoo on his upper arm, mostly covered by the short sleeve of his off-white T-shirt. He didn’t seem the type that my father would associate with. I asked him how he knew my father and his response added to the aura of mystery that surrounded him. “We must talk about that, but not now.” He suggested we met up after the seventh day of my father’s departure ceremony. His response to such a simple and basic question didn’t make sense. I don’t normally care for people who make everything more complex than necessary. Any other time I would have made an excuse and walked away. But how could I miss the opportunity of knowing something about one of my late father’s unusual acquaintances. I agreed to meet up. The only information that he offered on that occasion was his name, Majid. Four days later, as I joined the men in the close family and friends circle in the local barber to have our beard – the sign of mourning – shaved, I was still thinking about Majid. I wondered if he should have been included... Read the rest here.
