I am a Farsi speaking author, and I made the wrong decision to write my work of fiction in English. A decision that I now very much regret.
Writing in a language that is not your first language is a completely different game. I thought that was what an editor was for — to help correct the many grammar mistakes I make. Changing commas into full stops, adding definite articles where they are needed and removing the ones that are not, fixing awkward phrasing, cutting out unnecessary padding, and removing sentences that repeat the same meaning.
I thought I had done my part by writing the story, and that an editor would help me polish the language and make it read naturally. But now I find myself stuck, trying to find a publisher who is willing to give me a chance, rather than paying for the services of an editor upfront. And I can't help wondering if I made the wrong decision by writing this book in a language that isn't my first.
Whatever the outcome of this book turn out to be, one thing is clear: this would be the first and the last time I write a book in English.
